Day 7: Bonus content! I went to Sydney Brewery in Surry Hills to try out something more local. I ended up with Lumberjack Rye IPA – because why not mix my two favorite types of flavor in a tipple – and a refreshingly crisp and pine-like Hazy Pale Ale seasonal east coast IPA brew. Had I not also had a huge lunch, I would have had partaken from the food menu as well. Great spot, good seating arrangements, and to my American friends “starting a tab” isn’t a thing in Australia – thank goodness – but beware the urge to drink multiples! Took a pit stop at Crooked Mouth Brewing on the way back from Cuba! Easy to get to, the brews were plentiful and the food menu looked very reasonably priced! I liked the eastern-influenced Cousin Kevin IPA (the woodsy notes were strong) and the Drizzle stout did highlight a dessert-like strength with sweet maple undertones. On my way back from Mexico (NY) I stopped by @oncofermentations in Tully, NY. Guided by @nyscraftbeer , I’m grateful to have found this chill spot off the highway. The Intuitive (6th Anniversary) was full bodied and had delicious bergamot bitterness, and the Aesthesis (Blueberry Cranberry Vanilla) was a deceptively drinkable fruity sour. When in Tokyo I visited Hitachino Nest above Tokyo Station. I really dig this city view. Finally made it to @thecatskillbrewery! The iconic angry raccoon has made its appearance several times on my trips for #project13by62 . Of note is Ratface Macdougall, an orange-forward hazy DIPA with big body and smooth taste, and Devils Path had classic bitterness I could session easily. Huge kudos to the staff. A few days prior a wonder storm downed lines, and I overheard stories of gratitude for locals using the facilities to power phones - and trade stories of how spontaneous BBQ’s would be required to make use of meat in broken fridges. One and only night in Watkins Glen, I stopped into @upstatebrewingflx for a few brews. The staple Common Sense Kentucky Ale is an easy drinking malt-forward brew that goes down easy, the Roasted peppermint-mocha brown ale was quite subtle and an amazing alternative to stout heaviness. Finally, the Blizzard of Oz is a strong way to end the day, an imperial stout that sneaks up on ya. Honorable mention: the Dirty Chai brews a skew away from the typical pumpkin spice flavors common this time of year. Last night in Ithaca and I needed to hit the namesake @ithacabeer brewery! @garlandcitybeerworks brewery in Watertown hits all the industrial vibes for me. Can we talk about the Hopenhagen Lavender? The mildly bitter and malt flavor with a touch of lavender works way too well. Easily one of my favorites of all time, and I don’t say that lightly! Not my first time in Little Falls by a long shot, yet @rockvalleybrewingco opened since last here. Y’all must visit, full stop. The O’Regan’s Irish Stout had roasty notes and didn’t bloat you up, and Rock Lager is a crushable medium-ish bodied malt-forward yet not “bready” pour. This outpost from their mega Cooperstown location continues the vibe. Specializing with a few cask ales in addition to their most popular brews, the lightly toasty Jessica’s Red Ale has a familiar lovely rye-bread note (IMHO), and the cask pub ale Shepher’s Hollow is moderately malty with strong honey flavor that’s not sweet and mildly carbonated. Another new brewery visit! Today I skipped to @cooperstownbrewingco (who also manages @northwaybrewingco) in Milford, NY! Old Slugger English Pale was amazingly drinkable and refreshing, and the Nineman session ale was bready in all the right ways. I took home some cans of their Induction Ale, made for the Hall of Fame weekend a few days ago. Can’t wait to try!
